His favorite part of being an optometrist is providing one-on-one attention to his patients at each visit. During your appointment, you can expect Dr. Kaster to take the time to talk to you and understand your objectives for your eye health. Through mutual trust and respect, Dr. Kaster works to create a strong partnership with you so that he can help you attain your goals.
“I enjoy being available for my patients when they have questions or urgent needs, and the relationships that build on that.”
Born and raised in Canal Fulton, OH, Dr. Kaster received his bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University in Athens, OH. He was active as a drummer in the Marching 110, and an assistant in the biology labs.
He then went on to receive his doctorate at The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2005. During that time Dr. Kaster was very active in VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity) where he traveled to El Salvadore and the Dominican Republic to provide free eye care services to the poor. He was also president of Epsilon Psi Epsilon, a philanthropic optometry fraternity that provided free eye care in the Columbus area as well as supported seeing eye dogs. He was active as a Lion’s member, and served on the Dean’s advisory committee at the College of Optometry.
Dr. Kaster then returned to his native area to launch his optometry career. After working with Eye-Tech of Green for ten years, he and some of his staff founded and relocated to Kaster Eye Clinic in 2015.
With a special emphasis on eye health, Dr. Kaster performs comprehensive eye examinations and diagnoses diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataracts and other ocular pathology. He also has a special interest in contact lenses. Dr. Kaster fits a wide variety of lenses, including some specialty contacts, and fits custom-tinted contact lenses for migraine sufferers or those with severe photophobia (light-sensitivity), or prosthetic lenses for scarred eyes.
Dr. Kaster and his team are continually learning about the most current advances in optical treatment, technology and materials. Dr. Kaster is licensed to practice optometry by the state examining boards of Ohio, Colorado and Florida. He is a 20-year member member of the American Optometric Association, and also writes eye health articles for his blog.
A Portage Lakes resident and lover of water, Dr. Kaster volunteers his time with the Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club, Young Professionals Club, and various other volunteer events. He is also an avid boater, snow skier, golfer and musician.
In 2008, Dr. Kaster was featured on The TODAY Show, when he donated a kidney to his father using a breakthrough, minimally invasive technique. “They removed my kidney through my navel, and I barely have a scar to show for it.”
Like Dr. Kaster, he is a graduate of Northwest Local School District in Canal Fulton. He finished his Bachelors in Microbiology at Grove City College, PA, and then completed his optometry training at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Dr. Schanz served as class president and also obtained his Masters in Visual Science during his training.
Dr. Schanz and his wife, Karen, are the loving parents of two boys. He is highly involved with his church, serving as youth pastor. He is also an avid runner, still holding a track record at Northwest, and recently completed his first marathon in Akron in September 2015! We are happy to have Dr. Schanz join the Kaster Eye Clinic Team.

Frank hails all the way from Manchester, England! He will style you in a frame, review your lens options and take accurate measurements for a perfect fit. Naturally a big soccer fan (Go Manchester United!), Frank also adds a good amount of dry humor to the dynamic. He loves to cook, and is a loving husband to his wife Lynn, whom he met here locally serving as a camp counselor for children with special needs.
Sunnie obtained her state license as an optician in 2019, but has worked in all aspects of the optical field since 2000! She loves fun and unique eyewear and helping our patients find the perfect frame. She enjoys painting and spending time outside with her dog, Remi.
Roger is our newest tech! Joining in 2023, his main work lies in getting patients ready before Dr.Kaster enters the room. If he isnt working with patients you can find him in the back, working on orders for tinting contact lenses. He is currently working on getting a degree in science and (hopefully soon) becoming an optometrist!
